Indian Potash (IPL) has signed an agreement with the Bihar government to set up and operate two sugar mills at Sakri in Madhubani and Raiyam in Darbhanga, reviving previously closed facilities. The state Cabinet has already approved the revival plan.
The projects are planned as integrated sugar complexes, with distilleries, cogeneration power plants and compressed biogas (CBG) units alongside sugar production. This could diversify revenue streams beyond core sugar manufacturing.
The expansion strengthens IPL's existing presence in the sugar industry. The company has previously operated/acquired sugar assets in Bihar, including the Motipur Sugar Unit, which it acquired through a 60-year lease in 2011.
For Bihar, the projects are expected to create employment, revive idle industrial assets and improve market opportunities for sugarcane farmers, aligning with the state's broader push to revive its sugar industry.
