Kannur International Airport (KIAL) expects passenger traffic to recover steadily after a temporary slowdown caused by the West Asia geopolitical conflict, which disrupted flight schedules and reduced international travel demand.
Airport management stated that the decline was primarily driven by disruptions on Gulf routes, which account for a significant share of Kannur Airport's international passenger traffic. As flight schedules normalize, passenger volumes are expected to improve in the coming months.
KIAL remains optimistic that demand from the large Non-Resident Keralite (NRK) population in the Middle East, along with seasonal travel and tourism, will support a gradual recovery in international traffic.
The airport is also working to strengthen connectivity by pursuing additional international services and new airline partnerships, with the objective of expanding its route network and improving passenger convenience.
Management highlighted that improving operational stability and restoring flight frequencies remain key priorities as airlines gradually reinstate services that were temporarily affected by regional tensions.
Beyond passenger recovery, KIAL continues to focus on expanding its non-aeronautical revenue streams, including retail, commercial leasing, and cargo operations, helping diversify revenue beyond passenger traffic.
The airport also expects long-term demand to benefit from infrastructure improvements and enhanced regional connectivity, reinforcing its role as the primary aviation gateway for North Kerala.
While near-term passenger numbers remain below previous highs due to external factors, KIAL believes the slowdown is temporary and expects normalisation as geopolitical conditions stabilize and travel demand strengthens.
